What is the New Medicine Service?
The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service that provides support for people with long-term diseases who have been prescribed a medicine for the first time, with the goal of improving medication adherence. It is initially targeted at specific patient categories and conditions.
What is the Goal of this Service?
The goal of this service is to increase patient treatment adherence and, as a result, reduce drug waste. Reduce hospitalizations due to adverse drug reactions by detecting them early in the treatment process. During your visits with the pharmacist, you will be given advice on lifestyle changes that will aid in the treatment of your ailments.
Who is Eligible?
You may be eligible for the NMS service if you are starting a new medicine for Antiplatelet/Anticoagulant therapy, Asthma/COPD, Hypertension, or Diabetes. This service will be offered to you by a member of our team, who will request your signed authorization to engage in the service.
What Process Does the Service Follow?
During the initial appointment, one of our pharmacists will offer you some general information regarding your new prescription and the service, and we will schedule a phone or face-to-face follow-up session with you in two weeks. During your follow-up session, the pharmacists will inquire about how you’ve been getting along with your medicine, look into any concerns you’ve had, and offer helpful advice and support. In 1-2 weeks, the pharmacist will schedule a final appointment to check that you understand your new treatment and are not experiencing any side effects.
